McGhee Tyson Airport is owned and operated by the Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority. Established in 1978, the MKAA is an independent agency that also oversees operations at Downtown Island Airport in downtown Knoxville and is governed by a nine-member, voluntary Board of Commissioners. Each board member is appointed by the Mayor of Knoxville to a seven-year term.
