| Jacques Gautreau was born in Angers, in the Loire Valley region of France. A self-taught photographer, he lived and worked in Paris before moving to Knoxville, Tennessee in 2004. In 2006, a series of his Knoxville photographs, "Knoxville Through Fresh/French Eyes," was exhibited at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville. His prize-winning work has been featured in photography publications and exhibits in France and America. Early influences include humanist photographers, such as Cartier Bresson, Doisneau, and Ronis, working in black and white. Later, Gautreau switched to digital, which led him to experimentation with color, texture, and movement.
