  "Product Placement II" | Alex Merchant, Artist I am interested in how concepts of power and identity are perceived in the United States. More specifically, my paintings are constructed around my own experiences as a multiracial individual; both African-American and Caucasian-American. Historically, these two facets of American culture have formed a complex dichotomy, while only in recent years has that relationship improved to become socially acceptable, and even fashionable. My artwork sometimes uses absurd and uncanny visual language as well as images culled from art historical reference and popular culture to talk about this transformation in thought.
